f-Number

Indicates the brightness of the image formed by the lens and controlled by the iris. A smaller f-number means a brighter image.

f-Stop
A term used to indicate the speed of a lens. The smaller the F-number the greater amount of
light passes through the lens.

FTP
File Transfer Protocol is used to connect two computers over the Internet so that the user of one computer can transfer files and perform file commands on the other computer. FTP is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet).

FTP Server
The FTP server, running FTP server software, listens on the network for connection requests from other computers.

Fiber Optics
Flexible glass fibers used to conduct signals.

Field
One of the two equal parts into which a TV frame is divided.

Field Frequency
Number of fields transmitted per second in a TV system. The NTSC standard is 60.

Field of View
The horizontal or vertical picture size at a given distance from a camera to the subject.

FireWireTM
FireWire is a standardized serial com indications bus similar to USB that allows digital devices to communicate with each other at high speeds. It operates at 400 Megabits per second abd can connect up to 63 devices, such as cameras, disk drives, computers, and associated hardware. It has no need for a host controller; rather each device on a system can operate on its own, but must follow strict rules about when it can talk.

Fixed Lens - A fixed focus lens has one set focal length with a specific field of view which cannot be changed.

Focal Length
The distance from the centerline of the lens to the camera pick-up device. It determines the size of the image and the angle of the field of view as seen by the camera through the lens.

Foot Candle (FC)
Unit of measurement of the intensity of light. 1 FC = 10 lux

Frame
The total area, occupied by the television picture, which is scanned while the picture signal is not blanked.

Frames per Second (FPS)
Describes the number of full video frames displayed or recorded within one second. True real-time video consists of 30 frames / sec. for NTSC format and 25 frames / sec. for PAL format.
